Goedaert (Joannes)

Metamorphosis et historia naturalis insectorum.

Published in Middelburg, Jacques Fierens, [1662-67-69]. One volume, 8vo (152 x 95 mm). Engraved frontispieces, engraved portrait of the author in volume III, one heraldic vignette, and 126 engraved plates (2 folding), ALL COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND. Contemporary vellum. FIRST EDITION. Like many 'virtuosi' of the 17th century, Joannes Goedaert, who never attended university, began his investigations of the natural realm from the standpoint of an artist and craftsman. His sole work,
Metamorphosis naturalis, was the earliest study of insect populations in the Netherlands. By capturing 'larvae' and raising them to maturity, and by calling on his existing expertise as a painter, Goedaert was able to observe and record the transformations of beetles, flies, wasps, butterflies and moths. Nissen ZBI 1603. Sold.
